I don't want to drag the content as a huge paragraphs, let me make it as simple as I can. I have come across wide set of people have precursor thought that a person who have completed post graduation in statistics is a statisticians! Probably, yes can be the answer ! But, just read the below context and decide yourself.
Okay! Let me give out an example which I have come across in an discussion in one of my friends interview. The question raised was which is your favourite subject and merely the response from her side was "Statistical inference and Testing of Hypothesis " . The instant question raised from the interviewer was can you explain me what does type 1 error refers to ? I know in all our graduation and post graduation we immediately answer "Rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true ". Obviously, she did respond the typical answer which she learnt during her course. You might have thought the interviewer would have stopped with this answer. No, here the chapter begins!
The next immediate question to her by interviewer is, do you expect me to know what is meant by null hypothesis? I am not a statistician, I am just an layman who doesn't know theory about statistical terms. Can you just explain your answer with an example? She tried to convince with some sort of examples blah-blah whatever she has learned from her books and gave so many explanations to the panel.
Unfortunately , the panel again raised a same question I didn't understand your theories as I am a non-statistician, can you please describe more such that we would get convinced. She was unable to convince them and finally, she really got so embarrassed. But, she decided one thing in her mind, she was sure she is not going to get the job , so let me ask for the answer from them. She thought they never knew they were just making fun of her. But the answer was appreciable.
The answer he gave was " the candidate pursued statistics should be considered for interview in this company for the statistician post, however rejecting you when you are statistician is an type 1 error" , and the interviewer asked her am I right ? . She paused for a moment and just shook her head. He then added further, I am also a statistician completed my M.sc.Statistics , 8 years back. She was all way thinking he was a non statistician that's why he did not understand her theory.
This is not for showing that purely theories would not help you , but, this is to show theory + real world examples with scenarios will lead you as a statistician. Without theories, statistics doesn't exist. Theories converted to reality would emphasize the statistics. Always, don't accept theories as such, just imagine, question yourself and realize how those theories persist. Just pause and think how fabulous the statisticians have created these theories.
