Development of Modern Statistics - Visual Representation and Statistical Graphics

As I already mentioned in my previous post how the statistics was used in the beginning era even during Mahabharata period. Now i thought let me go to the modern evolution in the 19th century. First statistical body was established in early 19th century. Most amazing part is Florence Nightingale was the first female member in Royal Statistical Society which was founded in 1834. This society was first statistical body to get established. She was also a honorary member of American Statistical Association.  Nightingale became pioneer in Visual representation and statistical graphics.

How beautiful if i wonder how broad their ideas were at the very early stages even they do not have multi tasking computer or software. In the early 19th century they thought about the Visual representation, which most of the Companies and Organisations are now  using as a measure to reach clients and attract the general public for their advertisements. Nightingale used the method such as Pie chart which was actually developed by William Playfair in 1801. She made extensive use of coxcombs to present reports on the nature and magnitude of the conditions of medical care in the Crimean War to Members of Parliament and civil servants who would have been unlikely to read or understand traditional statistical reports. Nightingale is described as True pioneer of in the graphical representation of statistics.Nightingale made a comprehensive study on Indian Sanitation in Rural life. She had carried a 10 years of Sanitary reforms , in 1873 she reported that Mortality among soliders in India had declined from 69 to 18 thousand (Source from wiki) .

Just for my curiosity i did dig details about Nightingale. I did not know much of her works, but after looking over it i really got so surprised that how well she has laid a strong support of statistical figures to substantiate the importance of sanitation  which many historians have used for there further research and study. Let me think how the next step of arrivals of other statistical measures in the modern world in my next post.
