Does Statistics conveys only number?

I have come across many people especially non statisticians, they just think statistics means only numbers and figures. I keep wondering how come they think like that, is we the statisticians confuse others, are we ourselves clear and so on! But I really think and my thoughts over statistics is, yes it deals with numbers and figures, but in addition to it there is a interesting part of inferences based on which conclusions are drawn. Based on these numbers , a particular conclusion is made. Without numbers statistics is incomplete. Every conclusion needs a proof to substantiate and here comes the statistical numbers. Without this no theory is concluded. This what I feel statistical goes with numbers and figures in hand in hand.
